Cupcakes for the Crossing

For the past few years, I’ve participated in the historic “Crossing of the Dan” celebration at the Prizery in South Boston, VA. Here in Halifax County, VA, we are very proud to be the site of a major turning point in the American Revolution. My daughter, Sarah, is a sixth grade teacher here. She helped start the celebration of the crossing by creating a play about it and inviting her students to perform. As the years have passed, her former students have taken on responsibilities as stage manager and director. Many of these students experience dramatic performance for the first time and go on to join the high school drama class. Whether or not they continue in drama, the actors get to participate in something they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Can you tell how proud that makes me as Sarah’s mother? I get to see the effect her influence has on her students. (You can’t test that.) In an effort to support her in this program, the Alton Homemaker’s Club (of which I am a member), bakes cupcakes as a special treat for the student performers to have on their two performance days. I have been able to help with serving at least one meal each year. The students are always polite (Thank you) and seem to enjoy the food as well as the opportunity to perform in front of parents and peers.

I’m a big proponent of arts. Whenever the Halifax County Little Theater performs, I’ll be there with several varieties of cookies, bagged and labelled, for them to sell for their scholarship. Being the Cookie Lady gives me the chance to give back to a very special organization that nurtured and encouraged my creative daughter when she was a student.

“What goes around comes around” as the saying goes. The fine people associated with HCLT helped a young girl embrace her creativity, and in return, they got a fantastic teacher and cookies.
